I'm terrible at it, but I love to cook too. I need to spend some time to learn the basic techniques.

It's funny, I've always compared DJ'ing with cooking as well for some of the reasons you mentioned.

The best chefs balance experimentation with familiarity, new and old, improvisation with structure. They're also both very much based around the same sort of creativity, which is basically putting stuff together to make something new (recombinant, that's a pretentious way to put it :)

There are basic elements in music as there are ingredients in food; I could go on and on.
