i took part in a panel at the Guardian last week on sustainability and advertising. George Monbiot who was also on the panel writes about it here. I snapped the screen shot above last week, check the headline and then the 4 x 4 advert to the right of the post. surreal.

at the next left, stop thinking

i'd be mortified if someone bought me one of these for xmas. It's a product which I don't believe has had any real positive human effect on the way we live. it's a true gadget, a quick fix of personal security, sure it means that a satellite guides you to your destination, but it removes the need to understand maps, geography, landscape, how places connect together - all good things to know; effectively it removes the need to think. Was everybody really lost before the sat nav arrived? i'm interested in the possibilities that mobile and GPS mapping solutions will offer, especially the more social elements, the ability to publish and share personal points of interest, places, moments and that. but getting from a to b? i guess i'm a tad old fashioned in that sense.

i like a text wall. people's micro posts around a subject area (in this case music at the electric proms) makes for interesting reading. plus it's living, it evolves and changes. should be much more outdoor work that invites people to comment

phone in a cab

a sweet idea from O2, a free phone in a cab. we'd had a few ales, we called a friend, you talk through the speaker system in the cab, it worked, it was free, we all laughed. nice.

more niceness. this time from a big brand. Virgin Atlantic sent me this card on my birthday, with a badge and 2000 air miles.

i've often wondered why more companies that hold a customers birth date details don't send or do something. being nice...ahhhhh

so this package turned up for me this week and inside was this..

which i thought was curious and looked very nice. and inside that was this...

So then i realised it was from momiji, some stickers a nice hankie and when i opened the card this lovely note...

wow. so the smashing folks at Momiji sent me this great gift to say thanks for a post a made a while back about the momiji dolls. i was very taken back, here's a company being very nice for no specific reason what so ever. being personal, using detail and asking for absolutely nothing back at all.
